History

[edit]
Exit 3 of the station during construction in 2023

On 15 August 2014, LTA announced that Siglap station would be part of the proposed Thomson–East Coast line (TEL). The station will be constructed as part of Phase 4, consisting of 8 stations between Founders' Memorial and Bayshore.[3][4]

Contract T309 for the design and construction of Siglap Station was awarded to John Holland Pty Ltd – Zhen Hua (Singapore) Engineering Pte. Ltd. Joint Venture at a sum of S$176 million (US$ 130.8 million) on 21 March 2016. Construction began in 2016, with the expected completion date of 2023.[5]

Initially expected to open in 2023, the restrictions on the construction due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to delays in the TEL line completion, and the date was pushed to 2024.[6] On 5 March 2024, the LTA announced that the station will open on 23 June that year.[7][8]

An artwork named The Darkness which Reveals by Melissa Tan is located on the walls of the station above the platform. This artwork was commissioned under the Art-in-Transit programme. It features sculptures made of many layers of steel against a blue terracotta wall which symbolizes how shadows are cast on the moon.[13]

The Gift of Art programme is a programme by LTA where individuals or organisations can donate or commission an artwork to be displayed at MRT stations.[14] The artwork features a mosaic art which was inspired by the works of other artists such as Iskandar Jalil’s ceramics and Edwin Thumboo’s poetry.[13]
